Sergei Kochkin, an American hearing expert, has carried out various analyses of American hearing-impaired people and their use of hearing aids (The MarkeTrak Surveys). In 1997, there were poor hearing more than 27 million hearing-impaired people in the United States. 21.7 million of these did not own a hearing aid. This means that only about 20% of hearing-impaired people actually use hearing aids. For people of poor hearing working age, the figures are even worse. Nine million hearing-impaired people between the age of 34 and 54 do not own a hearing aid, while only a minority, less than 750,000, have accepted that they suffer from hearing poor hearing loss and are using hearing aids. Sergei Kochkin also found that the percentage of hearing-impaired people who use hearing aids is declining. In 1984, 23.8% of hearing-impaired Americans used hearing aids. In poor hearing 1991, the percentage was 22.6 and in 1997 it had declined to 20.4%. In 1999, another American survey which was prepared by the 'National Council of the Aging'covering 2,300 Americans who suffered from hearing impairment found that six out of seven poor hearing Americans aged 45 to 64 suffered from hearing loss, and three out of five people above the age of 65 suffered from hearing loss but did not use hearing aids.
